This convention breaking commercial, originally airing during the 2020 BET Awards, served as both a way to exemplify themes within the film, Da 5 Bloods, as well as reflect on the issues of systemic racism within America’s past and present cultural climate.

 

“THE SOUL OF AMERICA”

 

Midway through working on material for Da 5 Bloods marketing campaign, America was rocked by the tragic murder of George Floyd. In response to this harrowing event, I pitched Netflix on a new piece that would reflect the themes of the film and their connection to real-life injustices.

Rather than relying on footage from the film itself, this ad utilizes interviews with the director and lead actors, alongside footage from one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most iconic speeches to transcend the marketing of a film and deliver an important message about the stakes of America’s struggle with racism. This passion project allowed me to share my own perspective as a black man raised in America on how these recurring real life tragedies unfortunately tend to be forgotten over time.
